A Pig's Tale: Pig Named 6-7 Spared by Miami-Dade Leader.
It might not have been at the equivalent scale as sparing festive fowl, but the Miami-Dade County mayor conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. Clemency is justified for her. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with clear references to the sheer volume of pardons issued from the start of the commencement of a current administration.
“Unless you count eating six or seven apples per day,” she went on. “May this pig enjoy a prosperous future free from concern.”
This ceremony, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of eating roast pork during the holidays, was established to mirror the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The pig, contributed by a local firefighter, was christened after the modern linguistic fad of young people yelling “6-7” – originating from a rap song lyric – often without clear purpose. The phrase became so widespread that a prominent word reference recently named “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Future Secured
The pardoned swine is now scheduled to spend its days at a farm sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to open the holiday season,” said the event host, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It represents the essence of Miami: joyful, varied, and grounded in customs that unite the community. Annually, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way only Miami can.”
Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they toasted the pig's pardon.
