Educator Slain and 25 Female Students Kidnapped in Armed Clash at Educational Institution in Nigeria
Weapon-carrying attackers have killed a teacher and abducted at least 25 students in an attack on a female high school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, authorities have confirmed.
The armed faction stormed the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on the start of the week, officials stated.
The attackers "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a firefight" before scaling the perimeter fence and taking the pupils captive from their hostel, an official report indicated.
One member of staff was killed while trying to protect the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now receiving treatment.
Witnesses reported a considerable contingent of armed individuals, referred to locally as criminal elements, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to cause panic.
Community members told reporters that the attackers afterwards forced a contingent of young women into adjacent wilderness.
The authorities announced they had sent "additional police tactical units, together with army members and community security teams" to the area.
A systematic finding and recovery effort is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and believed flight corridors.
