Just as the recent storm tore through the northwest the night before, Manchester City swept the visitors away at the Etihad. It was a convincing 3-0 victory for the City coach's side owing to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a performance that clearly signaled their championship potential as they strengthened their place at the WSL pinnacle.

Successive Defeats for United

This result signalled consecutive WSL losses for Marc Skinner’s side for the first time since spring 2024, putting them a sizable gap off the league leaders with their trophy ambitions severely dented.

Manchester United's capability to juggle league and European football with a limited team has been a widely debated issue since they qualified for the European competition. Reviewing the calendar, it always felt like this was the week that would truly test this fortitude. Sadly for the away side, they appeared fatigued all game, the memorable win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having left its mark.

Team Changes

Marc Skinner had sought to rotate the squad with a several alterations. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Janssen and Galton all provided energy, although the exclusion of the on-form Melvine Malard to the substitutes was questioned.

City, in comparison, have no such fitness issues. The City coach made one adjustment from last week’s win over Everton with Hemp making her initial starting appearance since returning from injury.

Commanding Opening Period

The home side, meanwhile, could have added to their advantage when a superb Miedema through ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it was insignificant to the winning team. Having failed to overcome any opponent who finished above them the previous campaign, City's side now have wins against Arsenal and United to position them in a strong standing after the opening fixtures.
