Patients Stopping Slimming Medications Put On Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets
New research suggests that people who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People buying such drugs must be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Experts propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
People who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful return of hunger.
"I experienced a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," described an individual.
This challenge is compounded if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Use is higher among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural support.
