Severe Rains Worsen Situation for Uprooted Residents of Gaza, Officials Caution

Persistent precipitation over the past week have compounded the already dire circumstances of the hundreds of thousands of displaced residents in the territory, according to relief groups.

"Terrible" Conditions Brings Grave Dangers

A spokesman characterized the weather overnight as "awful", with precipitation so intense that around 15cm (6in) of water accumulated on the streets.

"The recent weather was truly difficult for the families. The downpours were so strong... And the gales were so strong," said the representative.

There is grave concern that children sheltering in temporary structures in damp garments will succumb to hypothermia and other sicknesses.

Casualties and Widespread Damage

The health ministry have confirmed that one baby has passed away from exposure and a minimum of 11 other people have been killed in building collapses triggered by the severe weather.

Other reports indicate a higher death toll. Spokespeople reported that numerous homes had totally fallen and scores had been partly destroyed.

Aid Distribution Seen as Insufficient

Groups have escalated distribution of tents, blankets and garments following the truce commenced, but they have said there is continues to be not enough aid entering.

"Agencies are operating tirelessly to bring in that relief and to hand it out, but the scale of the necessities is so immense that we still have a great number of individuals and minors who are truly struggling every night," warned one spokesperson.

The second phase of the ceasefire involves plans for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with political arrangements, the removal of personnel, and other provisions.

Relief organizations have underscored the need for "expanded and ongoing relief to address immediate and ongoing needs."

The hostilities was initiated by an assault in late 2023. Later actions have caused a significant number of lives lost in the territory, according to health ministry figures.
