UN:Me: A Psychological Horror Merging Silent Hill with Among Us Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several fascinating future games, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"It's a unique experience where a girl harboring several human souls within her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Within her exist four separate souls, each with unique anxieties and drives. These souls can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Judging by revealed footage, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie medical facility, while other scenes show the protagonist exploring a desolate chapel.
A World of Individual Dread
"What are you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to others can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are specific to each person."
The central gameplay loop involves managing the persona that surfaces at any given time. However, these identities will change against your will during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the girl one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Decision
At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the lobby have enormous flowers where their heads should be. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four personas claims that the physical form belongs to them," notes a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
After a player believes a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, since each soul can deceive or hide the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The last one standing could be a fake. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is can be follow on platforms.
