Vince Gilligan Discloses He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... At the Moment.
Vince Gilligan did not foresee that Pluribus would become a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
With the first season of the acclaimed sci-fi show wrapping up—and Season 2 officially in the works—the creative team reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.
On the Overwhelming Audience Reaction
Anyone might to get swayed by the rampant praise and fan theories about Pluribus. He is making a conscious effort to avoid both.
“It's like being force fed your favorite dessert and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's amazing, but I learn of it from others, and that's intentional. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever intend to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to take it in stride and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not influenced by audience chatter.”
“Better to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan concludes.
A Pressing Query: Has Vince Gilligan Know the Ending of Pluribus?
Given that Gilligan and his team are not listening by fan response, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… with some caveats.
“We have some compelling concepts about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to throw out a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
On the other hand, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort.
“My recurring proposal is that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”
Of course, why mess with the iconic TV endings?
“I want Carol to wake up in bed with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV.
