Zohran Mamdani Promises a 'Dawn' for The Big Apple in First Speech
On his inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” the metropolis, promising “a different age” and an ambitious commencement to his tenure.
A Groundbreaking Figure
The 34-year-old political star, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.
“A time such as this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani added.
Ignoring suggestions to be modest, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will rule boldly and broadly.”
Steering by Socialist Principles
Mamdani did not shy away from his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my principles for worry of being called extreme,” he said to loud cheers.
The swearing-in was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.
A Costly Policy Agenda
Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a agenda promising:
- Universal childcare
- Fare-free public buses
- A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
- A trial program of city-run grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion expense of these services may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Managing External Challenges
The new mayor also faces concern from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past comments.
Mamdani has moved to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as surprisingly cordial.
The Core Tests of Governing
Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing city upkeep: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and ensuring reliable subway operation.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.
As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
